Poor prison health care can affect the public at large. According to a report from the Commission on Safety and Abuse in America's Prisons, diseases such as tuberculosis, Hepatitis C and HIV spread easily from jails and prisons to the outside world.
GOD’S LOVE AND OURSELVES
1. We are creatures of love, designed to give and receive it. No wonder that when Christ addressed the Pharisees, He emphasized two commands to love: to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and to love your neighbor as yourself. What if a person didn’t love himself? Could he follow this command to love his neighbor as he loves himself? No. Complete love always reaches in three directions—upwards to God, outward to another person, and inward to you.
Maybe you have a problem with that last one. You might think, “I shshould dwell on loving myself. That’s not scriptural.” I can understand why people become confused about this matter of loving ourselves. Some Scriptures seem to indicate that believers are not to love themselves (Mark 8:34; Romans 7:18; Romans 7:24; 1 Timothy 1:15; Galatians 2:20). In spite of all these passages, there is not a single verse which states that God’s people—His creation—are worthless beings. I encourage you to look up all the verses in context. There is a simple explanation for each one of them.

Let me clarify the one which seems the most illogical. Jesus said, “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). What does Jesus mean by saying we should hate our mother and father, spouse, children and siblings? Is He stating that we should have animosity and hostility towards each other? No! He is simply saying that our allegiance, obedience, submission, and commitment to Jesus Christ must be far superior to our other loyalties. In contrast to our devotion to Him, our feelings for others will seem like hate to them from time to time, because we chose to obey and love Him more than them.
3. Time after time, Jesus demonstrated that people matter to God. Wartimes, a blind beggar, was another person whom the Son of God treated as special, although society told him he was worthless. When He heard him crying out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me,” He stopped and healed him. (Mark 10:46-52)
Jesus reached out to the woman at the well, who was not only a Samaritan, but had also committed adultery numerous times. Although she was an outcast to her community, she was somebody in the eyes of our Savior.
Jesus also extended mercy to another “nobody”—the thief on the cross. What was his name? Nobody knows. However, the Son looked at him and saw a person of value. He promised him, “Today you shall be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43) the way Jesus lived His life demonstrated that every single person has great value in the Father’s eyes.
4. throughout the New Testament, we see other indications that we are to love ourselves. First Corinthians 11 says that man is “the image and glory of God” (1 Corinthians 11:7). How can we hate the very image of God? Moreover, our heavenly Father thought we were worth the sacrifice of His Son: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8; Romans 8:32). If the Bible says that God loves us, who are we to refuse to love ourselves?
Loving yourself is an essential addition to the love triangle that includes loving God and loving others. Only a man who loves himself can truly love God and love others. For example, consider the command for husbands to love their wives as they love themselves. If a man doesn’t love himself, how could he love a wife? (Ephesians 5:25, 28-29) While this passage in Ephesians focuses on marriage, the same principle applies to those who are single. When you don’t love yourself, you don’t feel that you have anything to offer another person. How can you love them?

6. What does the Bible mean when it talks of loving yourself? It does not mean that we can be prideful, self-centered, or narcissistic. Love for you is reverence for yourself as a child of God. What if someone broke into your church building and painted rude words all over your church’s sanctuary? You would be appalled. Did you know that, in the eyes of God, mistreating or hating yourself is more sinful than defacing a beautiful church building?
You may wonder why hurting yourself causes God pain. He created you for Himself—to fellowship with Him, to use you to glorify Him and fulfill His purpose and plan through you. Jesus Christ sacrificed His life for you, and the Holy Spirit dwells in you. You are sacred because God Himself lives inside you!
You need to recognize that God has made you special. His plan for you is specific and personal, different from His plans for anyone else. From His perspective, you are somebody. You are one of a kind. Think about it. Have you ever met someone just like you? Of course not. When you love yourself, you simply show respect for yourself as His unique creation.
7. Why does God want you to love yourself? First, He wants you to be able to relate to Him on a personal basis. If you don’t love yourself, you have probably concluded that you aren’t lovable. Receiving His love will be difficult for you.
Second, God wants you to maximize your usefulness to Him. The Lord has an individual plan for you. If you don’t like yourself, you won’t surrender your life to God because you will feel unworthy of His calling.
Third, when you love yourself, you can become all that God wants you to be. Romans 8:29 says that we are to be conformed to the image of His Son. If you believe that you are worthless, and that God doesn’t care, how can you be transformed into the image of Christ?
Fourth, God wants you to do your part to fulfill the Great Commission. When you are upset with yourself, you will be unable to love others. As I mentioned in the lesson on loneliness, the happiest people in the world are those who give themselves to others. Every time you give a hug, a compliment, or a gift to someone else, you are saying, “I’m worth something and so are you.”
8. When you give yourself away, you are giving the life of Jesus to someone. Paul knew that Jesus was living through him, as he served the church. Paul wrote: "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me” (Galatians 2:20). He went on to say, “I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:20-21). What he meant was that he was enveloped in the Lord, and when a person met Paul, it was as if they were meeting Jesus Himself. In a similar manner, when you have a healthy love for yourself, the Lord can use you to reach a dying world.
9 What are the traits of a person who doesn’t love himself? He can’t relate to others except on a superficial basis. He always finds himself backing up from friendships and shielding himself from further hurt. There can be no quality relationship unless there is self-love. He builds a wall around himself, while at the same time, clamoring for someone to love him. A person who doesn’t love himself can’t become intimately involved.
Next, he will project criticism to others because he dislikes himself. Even in an ideal situation, this person will find something wrong. He will take his hostility and lack of love and overlay that onto the situation.
Someone who doesn’t love himself will be selfish. It seems contradictory, dodoes it? However, he is thinking, “I’m nothing. But one of these days, if I get enough, I’ll be worth something.” As we discussed in the lesson on rejection, he is constantly trying to verify himself. He will do whatever is necessary to gain the approval of others.
10. A person who does’t love himself will be isolated, negative, selfish, and insecure. On the other hand, what are the character traits of a person who loves himself?
1. He trusts himself, and accepts himself for who he is. A person who loves himself doesn’t need everyone to approve of him. He needs God’s approval alone. Ironically, those who love themselves usually find that many others love them, too. There is something magnetic about a person who is in love with Jesus Christ and has the right attitude about himself.
2. He is always progressing and growing. Because he believes in himself, he is free to be a success. Self-doubt and defeatist thoughts don’t prevent him from taking risks.
3. He is able to enjoy the moment. Instead of always rushing through this event to get to another, or hurrying through this season of life to get to a better one, he can slow down and enjoy the environment, enjoy what God is doing today. A person who loves himself can settle down and “bloom where he is planted.”
So far, we’ve seen the benefits of loving yourself, and the pitfalls of not loving yourself. You might be asking, “How can I fall in love with myself?” First of all, remember that, because you are saved, you are forgiven. Because Christ forgave you of all your sins, you are valuable.
11. Second, focus your heart on the Word. As you read it, you are subconsciously accepting that God thinks enough of you to speak to you. And when a holy, omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent God treasures you enough to communicate with you, you are somebody.
Third, fellowship with Him in prayer. As you do so, He will build you up. Here’s another thing you can try: Write down all the positive things about yourself and the things that you would like to be true of you. You will be surprised at how much is worth loving and accepting about you. You will see things which are commendable to God.
12. Fourth, ask the Lord to send you someone who will love you, someone whose love will teach you to love yourself. I also believe God has a friend for you to love, too.
Do you know that hymn that says, “I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore”? The chorus says, “Love lifted me . . . when nothing else could help, love lifted me.” My friend, that’s exactly what love will do. Love will lift you into a right relationship with God, right relationship with your brother or sister, and a right relationship with yourself.
13 . Father, if we could just get a glimpse of how You see us, then our attitudes would change toward ourselves. Teach us to respect ourselves enough to keep from harmful and disgraceful things. And we ask that you would help us, by faith, accept that we are worth something to You. You made each one of us special, one-of-a-kind. Thank you for loving us when there are so many things about us that are unlovely. Let the masks come off so that the life of Jesus Christ can flow freely out of us.
